Letter datelined Presbyterian Education Rooms, Phila, Dec 9th, 1848 and signed C. Van Rensselaer
The 1848 edition of McElroy’s lists Rev. Cortlandt Van Rensselaer (1808-1860) as the secretary of the Pres. Bd. Education at 25 Sansom in Philadelphia.
He was secretary of the Presbyterian board of education 1846–1860, and founded and edited the Presbyterian Magazine and The Home, the School, and the Church.
CDS is double struck with second image strongly rotated to the left and upwards from about the 2 o'clock position of the outer circle. (Note the strong arc inside the cds at the lower right). There is also a strong doubling of the '10' rate. Looking between the DEC and 10, there are two images of a 2 on the right and a slanted 1 on the left which is part of the doubled image, making the mailing date DEC 12.
