1d 1847 5c brown orange
HORIZONTAL PAIR, TIED BY BLUE GRID CANCELS ON 1851 FOLDED LETTER TO NEW YORK, BLUE "MILWAUKIE WIS. FEB 9." PMK.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS NOT SCOTT 1d, RATHER, THE STAMPS ARE SCOTT 1b, ORANGE BROWN; A GENUINE USE.
Not listed in Alexander
Lot 228 847, 5¢ brown orange (Scott 1d), horizontal pair, full to large margins at sides, clear at bottom and into at top, tied by complete strikes of blue 7-bar grid cancels, blue "Milwaukee Wis. Feb. 9" circular datestamp addressed to New York City, Feb. 1851 docketing on reverse, vertical file folds and water staining both clear of pair, otherwise, Fine, Scott $2,000 as two singles because Scott lists but does not price a pair on cover; Alexander census lists 8 5¢ 1847 covers excluding this cover; there is a cover from the same correspondence with a 10¢ 1847 in March 1851, ex-Lippman.
