QUARTERLY REPORT OF COLD SPRING DISTRICT OF THE SONS OF TEMPERANCE; LAST PART OF THE REPORT CONCERNS THE CHANGE IN DISTRICTS WITHIN THE AREA OVERSEEN BY THE DEPUTY WRITING THE LETTER. HE IS QUESTIONING THE VALIDITY OF THE CHANGE, APPARENTLY IN RESPONSE TO A LETTER INFORMING HIM OF IT. THAT LETTER IS ALSO INCLUDED WITH THIS ITEM.

Letter addressed to Jonathan Graham, Sons of the Temperance Society of NY, containing a quarterly report from the Cold Springs Division. Internal date of March 27, 1848.
Members of the society referred to each other as “brothers”. “Grand Worthy Patron” (GWP) was the title of an officer in the organization. Presumably, the Deputy Grand Worthy Patron (DGWP) was his assistant.
The Sons of Temperance membership was limited to those over 18. A Cadets of Temperance affiliate enrolled members aged 12-18. A collection of letters from the late 1840s is housed in the William Clements Library at the University of Michigan. About half are addressed to John F. Graham, who may be the recipient of this letter’s son.
