William T. Crowe certificate 18,379 (Aug 30, 2021) – it is a genuine stamp, genuinely used on an 1848 folded letter addressed to Bellefonte, Pa. The stamp, which is tied by a blue Philada Pa SEP 10 5cts integral rate marking, with a light diagonal bend at the lower left.
Strange. The cds is clearly dated SEP 10 and the letter is clearly datelined Phila Sep 16, 1848. The stamp is double struck with the cds, with the date not entirely clear, with the date of one strike being overprinted with the 5 from “5cts” of the second strike. Based on the dateline, the probably explanation is that the postal clerk applied the wrong date. However, this cover is listed as 9/10/48 based on the Crowe certificate and the clear strike in the center of the cover.
Letter contents appear to be an attempt to collect a debt by a Chauncey Hulburt for $250, from a supplier of goods in Philadelphia.
The 1850 Pennsylvania Business Directory lists Hamilton Humes (1754-1859) and Son (Edward Crough Humes (1810-1895)) as commission merchants in Bellefonte. Edward went on to form a banking company with Gov. Curtin, Judge Hale, and H. N. McAllister (Humes, McAllister, Hale & Co), which later become the First National Bank of Bellefonte, with Humes as the first president.
Chauncey Hulburt (1813-1884) was engaged in manufacturing in Bellefonte and removed to Philadelphia in 1851 to start a wholesale dry goods business.
