Scott #1 tied by New York City red square grid cancel on folded letter to Colby Chen in New London, Conn.

The 1850 Federal Census lists a Colby Chene in New London, Conn, born about 1802.
Letter docketed W S Woodward, July 20, 1849 on reverse, which is clearly an error since the letter was posted in June and datelined New York, June 20, 1849. It’s hard to imagine the letter took a month to travel from NYC to New London, Conn.
The 1848 edition of Doggett’s lists a William S. Woodward as a hardware dealer at 205 Pearl Street in New York City and residing at 271 Jay Street in Brooklyn. The 1848-49 Teale Brooklyn City Directory shows him at 267 Jay Street.
