Lot 1133 1847, 10¢ black (Scott 2), used on a pair of covers, the first four-margined (capturing portions of adjacent framelines at top and at right), gorgeously printed, and tied on folded letter sheet to Philadelphia by red barred-oval cancel, with matching "10" (doubled) and partial "U.S. Express Mail/Mass." cancel at left; the second on folded letter sheet to Washington, No.Ca., three-margined, tied by red square grid with red "New-York/DEC/7" postmark at right; four-margined stamp with corner crease/scuff at lower left; three-margined faulty, Fine to Very Fine, a presentable pair of First Issue covers.

Bryan Grimes (1828-1880) was a North Carolina planter and a general officer in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He fought in nearly all of the major battles of the Eastern Theater of that war.
Grimes was the last man in the Army of Northern Virginia to be appointed as a major general. He also led the last attack of that army not long before its surrender to Union forces at Appomattox Court House on the morning of April 9, 1865. After the War he returned to planting and became a trustee of the University of North Carolina.
