Lot 507 1a, 1847 5c Dark brown, horizontal pair cancelled but not tied on a folded letter addressed to New York by blue circular grid cancels with an accompanying Hunstville Al cds at left, stamps clear to wide margins, letter some light wrinkling not affecting stamps, Very Fine; signed E Diena and with his 1981 certificate (Scott $1,000 as used pair)

July 18, 1981. I have examined the letter sent from Huntsville, September 13, 1850, directed to New York, stamped with a horizontal pair of the United States Stamp, 1847, 5 cents, cancelled in blue 70. A photographic reproduction and attached here. In my opinion, the original letter is the perfect pair: I signed it "E. Diena"
Letter may have been written by John Haywood Lewis (1790-1859), attorney and Mayor of Huntsville (1826-28).
Notation at bottom refers to a June 1983 auction (GHIG?)
