Lot 6 #1, 5c Red brown, four well clear to large margins, strong rich color and impression, tied by red grid cancel to cover to Pittsfield, Mass., matching "Boston/5 cts/19 May" c.d.s. and straight line "Paid" at left, cover with light soiling and slight edge wear at bottom, stamp itself is fresh and very fine.

Letter addressed to Dr Joseph Pomeroy Root (1826-1885). He graduated from the Berkshire Medical College in Pittsford, Mass in 1850. He moved to Hartford in 1854 and was elected to the state legislature. In 1857 he moved to Kansas and helped slaves escape to Nebraska. He became the first lieutenant governor of Kansas in 1861 and was later appointed by President Grant to be the US Minister to Chile.
