Lot 709 1847, 5¢ red brown (Scott 1), with three ample margins just clearing at top, tied by red grid with matching faint town cancel to cover with "Hail Columbia" seal on reverse, addressed to Panama R.R. Co New York, Fine to Very Fine.

The Panama Railroad Company was founded in New York by William H. Aspinwall following the discovery of gold in California, Subsidized by the US Congress, the company was chartered to construct a railway across the Isthmus of Panama and was incorporated in April of 1848. The railroad was eventually completed in Jan of 1855.
Sewell W. Hall graduated from RPI in 1841 and became a civil engineer for the Troy and Schenectady Railway Company.
Sylvester S. Hall was the chief engineer and superintendent of the Chemung Railroad Company in Elmira NY in 1850
