THIS PAIR HAS HUGE MARGINS - LARGE AND CLEAR ON BOTH SIDES BOTTOM SHEET MARGIN AT BOTTOM OF PAIR, ALONG STAMP FRAME AT TOP OF PAIR. LARGE RED MARCH 30 NEW YORK TOWN CANCEL ADDRESSED TO WHITE HALL IN WASHINGTON COUNTY, NEW YORK. WE HAVE ALSO ATTACHED SCANS OF THE TWO PAGE FOLDED LETTER SHEET THAT IS INCLUDED WITH THIS LISTING. Letter datelined New York, March 29, 1849 and signed Patten, Lane & Allen. The enclosed circular, date Jan 15, 1849, informs its customers that the firm of Grannis and Patten has been dissolved and a new firm of Jonathan T. Patten, John F. Lane, and Henry Allen has been formed and moved to 192 Pearl Street, where they will continue the wholesale boot and shoe business.
Jonathan Thomas Patten (1792-1882) was born in Westford, married Ann Foster Smith of Virginia. She grew up on a plantation next to Mt. Vernon and remembered sitting on George Washington’s knee as a child. After marriage to a “Yankee Patten”, they moved to New York City where Jonathan was a prosperous boot and shoe merchant there until 1861. (Patten Genealogy #136)
