G. Carter’s Despatch 90 Fifth Street
Addressed to Mrs. Cecilia E. –ick, Easton Pa.
The 1848 edition of McElroy’s Philadelphia City Directory lists a George Carter, tobacconist, at 90 North Fifth Street. According to The Penny Post, George Carter ran the dispatch service out of his store, starting in 1848. In addition to the handstamp, he also issued a local (36L1) that was used on many other covers. The dispatch service for this cover delivered the letter to the US Post Office, which then delivered it to Easton.
