Lot 7777 1851 Cover franked Franklin 5c brown, variety 'dot in S' (4 large margins) tied by red grid pmks with 'New York JAN 11' cds at right. With letter. 5c 1(var) cat US$400+, SG 1(var) cat £550+, both for loose stamp alone plus premium for variety & premium on cover. Beautiful quality classic item.

H R Harmer sale 2087 (F R Mayer) lot 92 realized 105 dates the cover as 1851.
Marked Due 5 as the distance from New York to Milton, Vermont was over 300 miles. Milton is near the border with Quebec.
Endorsed on the back Jan 11, 1850 with lighter 1851 marking below.
Letter addressed to Rev James Dougherty (1796-1878), born in Park, Ireland, 12 years Pastor of the Congressional Church in Milton and 16 of the Congressional Church in Johnson, Vt. (from the inscription on his tombstone). He emigrated with his two brothers in 1819 to Vermont, graduated from the University of Vermont in 1830, ordained in 1832, became Pastor in Milton (1836-48) and Johnson (1851-67).
