Alexander Randall (January 5, 1803 in Annapolis, Maryland – November 20, 1881) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Maryland, and served as Attorney General of Maryland from 1864–1868. He was the thirteenth child of his parents, John and Deborah Knapp Randall.
Randall’s wife, the addressee, was Catharine Gamble Wirt (1811-1853), the daughter of US Attorney General William Wirt. Alexander and Catherine married in 1841. If the letter was mailed in Feb of 1848, Catherine was 8 months pregnant with their fourth child, Fanny Nicholson Randall, who was born on March 19, 1848.
