Lot 2027 1847, 5¢ dark brown (Scott 1a), tied by large manuscript cancel on outer folded letter with neat red Norwich & Worcester Railroad Apr 23 handstamp; stamp with oversized margins on three sides (even showing frameline of stamp to right), cut into at left; letter with slight discoloration, Very Fine usage.

The March 19 cover is a different cover with the stamp orientated differently and the cds in a different position on the cover.
Letter sent care of Mr. Charles A. Welch with the firm of Dodge & Tucker in Boston.
Charles A. Welch is listed as a clerk at 21 Pearl Street in the 1850 Boston city directory. The same edition lists the firm of Joshua C. Dodge and Alanson Tucker Jr as commission merchants at 47 & 51 Milk Street.
The 1848 edition lists Mr. Welch at 4 Bowdoin and Dodge, Tucker & Co at 16 Pearl Street.
The 1849 edition lists Mr. Welch at 51 Milk Street and Dodge, Tucker & Co at 47 and 51 Milk Street.
From this we can conclude that the letter was mailed in either 1848 or 1849, assuming that the 1848 edition was finalized in the late fall of 1847, as were the subsequent editions in the year before their published year dates.
