Letter datelined Boston Sept 1, 1847 and signed Waterston Pray & Co. They are listed as commission merchants at 27 Federal in the 1848 edition of the Boston City Directory. The firm was operated by Robert Waterston, J W Hall, C. Deane and Robert Barnett.
Letter recipient is Albert Ruyter Hatch (1817-1882), an attorney in Portsmouth, NH. He represented Portsmouth in the State Legislature (1847-48) and became solicitor for Rockingham County (1848-56) and clerk for the US Courts of the District of New Hampshire (1848-73). He returned to the state legislature (1873-76).
