Letter sent in care of William Peter, British Consul. McElroy’s 1849 edition does not list any Rufus King in Philadelphia. A diplomat with that name was a framer of the US Constitution but he died in 1827 and had no sons with his name. A William Rufus King (1876-1853) was Minister to France (1844-48), US Senator and Vice President under Franklin Pierce.
