Lockport NY received 19,100 5c stamps on Oct 4, 1847
This cover is the earliest known use from Lockport.
Letter addressed to Charles Bartow (1822-1872), a lawyer. He studied law with A. P. Hascall and, during the time he practiced in Leroy, he partnered with Hiram W. Hascall. Later, Charles relocated to New York City (after 1857), where he died. His father, Jacob, studied law with Aaron Burr. His brother, Alfred F. Bartow, was also a lawyer in Leroy, NY.
The letter was written by A. A. Boyce. Anson Augustus Boyce (1813-1904+) was a lawyer in Lockport, NY, dealing mainly with land purchases and delinquent mortgages. In his autobiography (1904), he writes “About 1847 and 1848 I was in the habit of obtaining through my legal friend Charles Bartow of Le Roy, money to loan to the farmers upon well approved security about Niagara County. As Bartow was a superior business manager and he had the entire confidence of wealth}- farmers and business men about Le Roy, he had no difficulty in finding funds for all the safe loans I could make through his agency.”
