Letter sent to J W Curtis care of Capt. Ellis and is datelined Hampden Dec 8, 1849. An 1837 and 1850 census of Hampden (based on discovered slips of paper found in the town vault 1978, some missing) identifies the addressee as Jacob W. Curtis (1825-1852), son of the letter writer Jacob Curtis Jr (1802-1863). Two other sons, Philander and George, are mentioned in the letter. Jacob (the father) was married to Rebecca Sears (1810-1900).
