Letter addressed to Luella Bartlett (Bell) Merrill (1823-1910), daughter of Jacob and Laura (Bartlett) Bell and was born in Haverhill, NH. She married Daniel Ford Merrill (1812-1904) in 1845, who graduated from Dartmouth in 1836, received his Master’s degree in 1839 and became the principal of Haverhill Academy (1839-41). Due to failing health, he moved to Mobile Alabama and taught for 20 years before retiring. The Merrills moved to Washington DC after the Civil War and served as a clerk in the 2nd Auditor’s office in the Treasury Department (1865-68).
