Notes
Was mailed from Philadelphia and shipped from New York to Elberfeldt, located in Prussia. Elberfeld at that time a small city, later in 1929 becoming a part of the city Wuppertal in nowadays Northrhine-Westfalia, just northeast of Cologne. The cover with the addressee's name cut out, shows transfer markings of Liverpool (March 1848, reverse) and Aachen (AMERICA per ENGLAND) and was shipped from New York by the steamer Hibernia. The 5 cts stamp, is clearly from the first printing prior 13 March 1848, with the typical sharp impression, full margins and a deep orange brown shade.
