Notes
This is an amazing piece. It is a letter, mailed in 1848 to the Clerk of Courts of Ontario County, New York, in the city of Canandaigua. The letter was folded, affixed with the 5-cent Franklin stamp, sealed with red wax, cancelled, and delivered! The letter was cancelled with a round orange cancel from Clarkson, New York, on April 17 (the year must be 1848, as that is the date inside the letter).
The letter is a summary of court cases, probably heard on a circuit by a judge, and mailed to the county seat. Zoom in and look closely at the stamp - it is intact, but you can see some damage in the upper right corner.

Col. Simeon B. Jewett (1801-1869) was a lawyer from Connecticut who moved to Clarkson in 1823. For many years he served as US Marshall for western NY. He is listed as a surrogate judge in Clarkson in 1845.
