The Gustavus Schmidt family was led by Gustavus Schmidt (1795-1877), a New Orleans lawyer, editor of the Louisiana Law Journal, author of several works on Civil Law, and a lecturer on Civil Law at the University of Louisiana. As a young man, he emigrated from Sweden, settled in New Orleans, and married Melanie Seghers. His son, Charles Edward Schmidt (1832-1891) was also a prominent New Orleans lawyer, (Tulane University Library). Charles is listed as a student in the 1849-50 Course Catalog of Xavier University in Cincinnati.
