The commission merchant firm of Amory, Chapin & Co, upon the death of Josiah Chapin was taken over by the surviving partner, Henry Lippitt (1818-1891) in 1846. Together with his younger brother Robert Lincoln Lippitt (1823-1858) they changed the name to H & R Lippitt. They were principly involved in the buying and selling of cotton and clothes. Henry later became governor of Rhode Island (1875-1877).
