A pair of US #1’s on an 8 page folded letter dated Aug 11, 1849, involving two important figures of 19th century American History!
This letter, bearing an Aug 12, 1849 Washington circular date stamp, is addressed to Salmon P. Chase, a former Ohio governor who became US Senator in February of 1849. Chase later served as secretary of the treasury under Abraham Lincoln, who subsequently appointed Chase as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
The sender was Gamaliel Bailey, an American journalist and ardent abolitionist. When this letter was written, Bailey was editor of the National Era, an abolitionist newspaper in Washington DC, which first published Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1851-52.
