Description:
US #1 on FL, sent by John W. Graham to Capt. James Skinner in New London, CT, deposited with the route agent on the US Express Mail, NY train and boat route. It 1849. It bears the US Express Mail NY mark as well as “Paid” and “5”. The enclosure concerns Mr. Graham’s request for advice from Capt Skinner on how to obtain counsel, to collect outstanding payment for service as an officer aboard a ship. Difficult to read, but the name of the ship seems to be “John Jay” (?) Not in the Classics Society census or in Alexander.

James T. Skinner was captain of whaling vessels. From Sept 1846 til May 1849 he sailed the Calumet in the Pacific. In Aug 1849 he left New London aboard the Jefferson heading for the Northwest coast and did not return until March of 1851.
