Letter addressed to Miss Kate Wales, c/o S J Bacon, New York City. There is a Sherman J Bacon (~1812-1898) listed in the 1854 edition of Rode’s NYC directory. He is not listed in the 1847, 48 or 49 editions of Doggett’s. The St. Louis CDS is the pre-Nov 1850 version. All this suggests this cover was mailed in 1850.
Sherman J Bacon is listed as a manager of the Demilt Dispensary (1863-1871) in NYC. He is also listed in the St Louis 1845 City Directory as a druggist in partnership with Samuel T. Hyde.
