Lot 72 (2) 10¢ 1847 issue on cover tied with a pen cancel with Washington City DC cds and “Paid” ms addressed to Mrs. Leverett Saltonstall (wife of the first major of Salem, Mass). Cover with slit flap on reverse and a diagonal crease. Stamp has three margins, centered Fine. Lot includes a July 12, 1944 letter from Leverett Saltonstall (then Governor of Mass). Actually, the letter is written to Lucy Saltonstall Tuckerman, daughter of Mary Eliza and Leverett Saltonstall. It was probably by her husband, Dr. John Francis Tuckerman, who was stationed in Washington DC. He wrote almost daily to his wife when she was visiting her mother in Salem.
