Addressed to Mr. James S. Colwell care of John Irwin & Sons. In the 1790’s, John Irwin manufactured rope walks used in the Allegheny Mountains. In 1835, his son Henry joined the business and it became “John Irwin & Son.” Another son must have joined the business later as the fir was still called John Irwin & Sons in 1856, located at 57 Water Street (1856 Pittsburgh City Directory).
