James H. Roosevelt (1800-1863) was a lawyer at 482 Broadway (Doggett’s). A graduate of Columbia and Harvard, he became sick, possibly from polio, and had to give up practicing law. He was the third cousin of Theodore Roosevelt’s grandfather. He never married. In his will, he left his fortune of nearly $1 million to found Roosevelt Hospital.
