Ample margins to just in at top right, red square grid cancel (not tied), matching "New-York May 4" circular datestamp on 1849 blue folded letter to Meriden Conn., mostly clear strikes of red Swarts' "Letters for N. York City Direct to Chatham's Square Post Office" (on backflap) and "Post Office Swarts Chatham Square" oval handstamps, file folds do not affect stamp, Very Fine and an unusual use.

The Union Works, in Meriden, Conn., was originally founded by Charles Parker (1809-1902). Partnerships were formed with many over the years, including his brothers, John and Edmund, which may be the J & E Parker this letter is addressed to. Most notably known for lighting, the firm produce a variety of other goods.
