5c Red Brown (1). Large margins to just touched incl. part of adjoining stamp at right, tied by red grid, matching "Cumberland Me. Jun. 4" circular datestamp on blue 1850 folded letter to Bedford Springs Pa., some slight wear, Very Fine, this is the only recorded usage of the 5c 1847 Issue from Cumberland Me., with 2001 P.S.E. certificate, the distance between destinations was greater than 300 miles and so this must have been sent short paid and not noted as such

Letter addressed to Espy Lyon Anderson (1810-1866), the son of Dr. John Anderson, (1770-1839), who in 1796, purchased the 2200 acre property on which the Bedford Mineral Springs were located, and in 1806, he built a hotel there, called the "Stone Inn", for visitors wishing to take the curative mineral waters there, and it became very popular, being visited by Presidents, Senators and other important Americans. It served as the Summer White House of President James Buchanan.
