Lot 4014 5c Red Brown, 10c Black (1,2 two), two singles of latter, 5c with ample to large margins, both 10c with ample margins to just barely in, all tied by several strikes of blue 10 in oval cancels, matching Baltimore Md Sep 18 cds on blue 1849 Noble correspondence folded cover to Halifax, Nova Scotia, clear Ud States, Halifax Sp 27 1849 circular backstamp, ms 4 ½ Canadian rate mark, ms ˜pr steamer Niagara via New York'. Both 10c stamps with faint toning, light cover file folds through the 5c and 10c stamps provide an additional tie.
Otherwise fine, and extremely rare five cents and ten cents 1847 issue combination cover to a foreign destination. Scott retail for a 5c and 10c combination cover $25,000+

Expertization: 1985 PF certificate which states in part ˜a genuine usage overpaying the 10c rate'

Christie's sale 8224 (9/27/95) realized 10,350
Cover actually went via Boston, not NY, to Halifax. Original postage of 5c was incorrect. 10c stamp paid Baltimore to Boston postage (2nd 10c stamp was added in case letter was overweight “ it was.) Therefore, the 5c stamp was overpaid.
