Cover front of letter from December 9, 1850 franked with US #1 5c paying the postage from Baltimore Md to Boston. Put aboard the ship ˜Europa to Liverpool on Dec 11, 1850 and then sent on to Prussia (UK postage = 1 shilling, 4 pence = 32 groschen) via Ostende, Belgium. Total additional postage was 40 groschen. (In 1847 1 groschen = 12 pfennig)

Despite the distance between Boston and Baltimore being over 300 miles, the internal US rate was only 5c for transatlantic mail, due to the treaties with Great Britain and Prussia.
