Destination: Paris, FRANCE
Description: Cover franked by an 1847 Issue 5 cents stamp for the half-ounce US inland rate per the 1849 US-GB Treaty. It was carried by the Cunard steamer "America," which left NY on July 31 and arrived in Liverpool on August 13. GB debited France 10 decimes (1 Franc) per the "Colonies Art. 13" marking, and the letter entered France via Calais on August 14. France rated the cover for a triple-weight (on a 7.5-gram base) 16 grams per the manuscript "16" at the upper left, and collected a triple-weight 45 decimes. 16 grams is equal to 0.56 ounces, so the US prepayment should have been a double-weight 10 cents, if the French measurement was correct.
