IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, THE STAMP WITH A TINY HORIZONTAL SCISSORS CUT IN THE MARGIN AT TOP LEFT.

The 1849 Baltimore city directory lists Russell, Mercer & Co as importers of German, French & English fancy goods at 292 W. Baltimore Street. It also lists Thomas Russell of the same firm.
