Lot 804 #1 1847, 5c Brown, 4 ample to large margins, fine impression and lovely shade, tied by blue 5 in oval to an 1849 FL, the Baltimore cds is a fine example of the inverted month postmark (OCT is upside down), stamp shows prominent plating marks including line in U, vertical file fold, Extremely Fine, a lovely cover.

Alexander listed as 10/5/49
Hugh White Sheffey (1815-1889) was a lawyer (from 1840), legislator in the Virginia (representative, Senator, member of the constitutional convention from 1846-54), Speaker of the House of Delegates (Dec 1861-1865), and Judge (1865-69). He was forced to resign the judgeship when declaring the “ironclad” Oath was made mandatory for judges in 1869. [The Ironclad Oath was a statement that public officials in the South had to declare that they had never supported the Confederacy. Its purpose was to remove ex. soldiers and politicians from public office after the War.] High married Louisa Cole, of Baltimore, on Dec 23, 1847 so this letter may have been written by one of her family members.
