John A. Duncan (April 10, 1805 – March 1870) was President of the National Bank of Wilmington and Brandywine. He was the second son of John and Elizabeth (Woolston) Duncan. The father, John Duncan was by vocation a farmer. After the birth of John A., he removed to Baltimore and engaged in the carriage business. John A. Duncan was a clerk in a hardware store that he and his brother, Jeremiah bough and ran for a few years until Jeremiah left the firm. John continued to run the store until 1860.
He was for many years a director in the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad, and also in the Delaware Railroad. He was a director in the New Castle county Mutual Fire Insurance Company; in the Wilmington Savings Fund; and also in the National Bank of Wilmington and Brandywine, of which he was President at the time of his death and for a number of years previous. He was one of the founders of the Wilmington Coal Gas Company, in 1851, and was its first Secretary, holding this office during the remainder of his life, and also that of Treasurer from 1852. He was one of the original incorporators of the Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery, and was a member and Treasurer of a whaling company.
