1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single perfectly tied by a blue numeral \"5\" in circle cancel on a 1848 dated folded letter sent to Lewis Gassaway in Annapolis, Maryland. Accompanying blue February 28 Baltimore, Maryland circular date stamp cancel at left and partially repeated numeral \"5\" in circle cancel at bottom left of stamp. The stamp features a deep red brown color and ample margins all around. 2008 Philatelic Foundation Certificate (PFC)
The 5-cent stamp on this folded letter pays the rate for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less sent under 300-miles. This is the perfect item for the Maryland state postal history enthusiast, student of 1847 Issue cancels or collector of great classic U.S. covers.
