Three full margins, just in at top, small sealed tear at bottom of stamp, tied by blue grid and also matching "5" in oval handstamp on folded cover to Fort McHenry at Baltimore, second strike of "5" at right and matching "Steam" straightline, faint toned spot from wax seal on back, Very Fine appearance, very unusual Baltimore waterway usage -- although a number of 1847 Issue "Steam" covers routed thru Baltimore are known, this one is unusual because it is addressed to Fort McHenry and was essentially treated as a drop-rate letter without the post office datestamp

Letter sent in care of Colonel Francis Smith Belton (1791-1861), who joined the Navy in 1812 as 2Nd Lt. of the Light Dragoons and rose to the rank of major during the War of 1812. He became a brev. Col. during the War with Mexico. His wife was Harriet (Kirby) Belton (1798-1873). They had two sons: Winfield Scott Belton (1820-1887) and Edmund Francis Belton (1821-1822).
Winfield Scott (Joseph Francis) Belton was married to Rebecca Dawson Todd (1824-1892) in 1847 in Philadelphia.
