In 1850, the newly established border town of Brownsville, Texas was a critical hub for the merchant firm Charles Stillman & Brother (a partnership between town founder Charles Stillman [1810-1875] and his brother Cornelius Stillman [1815-1895]). Operating alongside major partnerships with transport tycoons like Richard King and Mifflin Kenedy, the Stillmans established a commercial empire handling riverboat transit, silver mining, and cotton brokerage.
