The 1850 Boston City Directory lists Daniel Safford (Oct 30, 1792-Feb 3, 1856) residing at 3 Beacon Street. He was a prominent merchant in Boston, held many offices in the state legislature, was Deacon of the Mount Vernon Church, president of the City Missionary Society and worked with the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary and the Home for Aged Females. His memoirs were published in 1861 by his widow, Ann Eliza Bigelow Turner Safford, sister of Rev. Justin Edwards of Andover, father to Miss Ann E, Edwards (1828-1921) and the recipient of this letter.
