Notes
Most mails brought into New Orleans before the mid 1850's were brought there by boat. Some of the boats had contracts to carry mail; many didn't. The cover to Stratford, Conn. bears the STEAM marking applied at New Orleans to covers brought in by boats without a mail contract

Miss Elizabeth Lyon Linsley, of Elmwood, Stratford, Conn (1821-1896) was the daughter of Rev James Harvey Linsley, Baptist Minister and naturalist, and Sophia Brainerd Lyon, daughter of Col. William Lyon. Elizabeth never married.
