Lot 387 U.S.A. - "WAY" MAIL¨RARE "WAY" USAGE OF THE 1st-ISSUE 5c ON COVER TO NEW ORLEANS; Attractive 17/20 Dec. 1849 E to New Orleans franked by a 1st-Issue 1847 5c Red-Brown (4 margins - close at top left; pre-usage crease) tied by a fine grill of crossed manuscript lines with "Way 1" written alongside in a matching ink, also having a partly fine "NEW ORLEANS" red c.d.s. (20 Dec.) alongside. Rare usage of a 1st-Issue 5c on a cover handed to a postman on his rounds and so the stamp was cancelled with the postman's pen long before he returned to his 'home' P.O.
