Lot 6052 1847, 5¢ dark brown (Scott 1a), two singles on cover addressed to Cincinnati Ohio, each with mans. cancel, left stamp with clear margins to into, right stamp with clear to large margins, faint New Orleans La postmark at center; cover with trivial toned spots, Fine. Scott $450.

Charles Edouard Dominique Schmidt (1832-1891) was the son of Gustavus Adolphus Schmidt (1795-1877), a lawyer in New Orleans at 117 Royal Street (1846 Michel & Co. New Orleans Annular Register). Gustavus emigrated from Sweden to New Orleans in 1829, became a successful lawyer and started the state’s first law school (Schmidt’s Law School) in 1844. The school later merged with the University of Louisiana (now Tulane).
Charles was educated at Spring Hills College in Alabama and at St. Xavier College in Cincinnati. Following in his father’s footsteps, Charles earned his law degree in 1852 at the University of Louisiana. During the Civil War, Charles enlisted in the Crescent Regiment, Louisiana Infantry. He was an attorney for the New Orleans Insurance Company. He was also a Professor of Maritime Law at Louisiana State University.
