E. A. Souder & Co. was a prominent 19th-century shipping, shipping agency, and commission merchant firm based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Operating out of locations like the Dock Street Wharf, the firm was highly active in the maritime trade around 1851, managing cargo, chartering vessels, and coordinating shipping routes across the United States, the Caribbean, and South America. The head of the firm was Edmund Alphonso Souder (1805-1873).
George F. Fuller (1822-1881) was a portrait and landscape painter, unmarried in 1851. He traveled to many cities in the north (Boston, New York, Philadelphia) and the sourth (Mobile, Montgomery, Augusta) so E. A. Souter was probably his mail forwarding agent in Philadelphia.
While the cover appears to be addressed to "Mrs." Fuller, note the r at the end with a similar stylized flourish. The letter is addressed to Mr. Fuller.
