Daniel F. Kelleher sale 781 lot 3462 realized 225 (image) notes there is no explanation why this cover is dated 1850 on either the item or in Alexander’s 2001 book.
In the Thomas Alexander notes in the APRL, the entry for this cover has a copy of an exhibit page from Herbert Skinner dated 3/16/98 (date of submission to Thomas) in which Herbert displayed the cover as being sent on Oct 3, 1850. It appears that Thomas took Herbert’s word for this.
The town of Assumption was changed to Napoleonville in 1871. It is the seat of Assumption Parish.
Cover appears to be addressed to Lapine and G. Freret. I could find no reference to a firm by this name. However, the Freret Brothers ran a Cotton Press (1846 and 1861 directories)
