Figure 15 Keokuk Iowa, Nov 14, 1849 red CDS in upper left corner of light blue folded letter. Affixed in upper right corner is 5c (#1) now heavily damaged (only about left 2/3 present) from apparent one-time attempt to tear the stamp off the cover. Stamp is cancelled with a 7 bar grid (not tied) but later tied by crayon filing number. Letter is addressed to John D. Divin Esq., Ottumwa Iowa. This is the earliest know use of an adhesive postage stamp in Iowa.
