Morgan Reno (1816-1869) arrived in Johnson Co. as a young lawyer in 1839. He served as the Treasurer of Iowa Territory 1840-46, as territorial and early statehood librarian, and as the first state treasurer under Gov. Ansel Briggs. Reno was elected Mayor of Iowa City in 1857 and served as Regent of the State University in 1858-59. On Oct 21, 1862, Reno was appointed Commissary of the 6th Iowa Cavalry and served with that unit in Gen. Sully’s 1863-65 expeditions against the Sioux in Dakota Territory.
