Red Galesburg ILL / Dec 26 (1850) cds with red obliterator tying 1847 5c stamp to folded letter.
The first 1847 cover known from Galesburg, Illinois appeared in the Richard C. Frajola, Inc., sale #4 held on November 28, 1981.
The cover is a blue folded letter written in Galesburg December 24, 1850 by F. Bascom. It traveled about 55 miles to Rev. L. Spencer in Peoria, Illinois. The stamp is tied by a red 19 mm diameter grid with 7 bars. The 30 mm diameter cds is also red and is dated December 26. a filing fold does not affect the stamp or markings.
The stamp is the brown shade. It has three nice margins and is cut very close, but clear, at the bottom. It may be the dot in S variety.
F. Bascom [was] a Presbyterian minister. He wrote to Rev. Spencer seeking Spencer\'s help in revitalizing the Galesburg congregation which had suffered some un-Christian action by one member against some others and from the resulting church sanctions against the offender. Reference is made to some college youths and the start of a new school term. The school is not named but could have been Knox College, an independent institution founded in 1837 and the site of the fourth Lincoln-Douglas debate. It might also have been Lombard College.
