1847, 5¢ red brown (Scott No. 1). Ample to large margins, tied by pen cancel and light vertical file crease on folded letter to Rockford, Ill. with light red "Dixon Ill. Mar. 20" c.d.s. at left, contents headed "Washington March 18th 1850" (the letter mentions both Gen. Shields and the Senate, so one can assume that this originated in D.C.); cover with manuscript note at top written at a later date, Fine and rare. Estimate $300-400

It Is A Genuine Usage, The Stamp With A Vertical Crease FROM A FILE FOLD
Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc. Sale 1125 lot 634 unsold notes cover dated March 30, 1850 and feels that Alexander listed this cover twice (from Washington DC on 3/29 and Dixon IL listed as 5/20/50)
CDS date is MAR. The first number is definitely a 2, not a 3, as there is a curved diagonal line that goes from right to left before meeting a lower horizontal strike. Note that the darker horizontal line looks like bleed-thru from the letter inside and the base of the 2 is slight above and to the right of this. The second digit could be be a 0 or 9. The center and lower left is too faint to enhance.
I agree with Siegel's opinion that this cover is listed twice in the census. Piecing all the details together, the original letter was written in Washington on March 18, 1850 and a cover note was added on 3-27-50. The cover was carried outside the mails to Dixon, Illinois, where it was mailed on March 29, 1850.
Note that I have kept the Washington DC listing intact so readers can see the original write-up of this cover and understand why it was also listed from Washington DC.
It is interesting that no one got all the details of this cover correct, although Siegel's sale 1125 was the closest, being only 1 day off.
